Finding Strength in the Struggle: The Story Behind Sinner
Share
High school can feel like a battlefield.
For many people, it’s a place filled with expectations, awkward moments, and the constant pressure to figure out who you are supposed to be. It’s also a time when prejudice, self-doubt, and fear of the unknown can make even the strongest person feel small.
I didn't enjoy it; it wasn't Rina's favorite either.
Maybe that's why she wrote Sinner. She felt like Demo, without the superpowers. (Unfortunately)
Demo is not like the other students at Angel School. As a half-demon living in Heaven among goddesses like Hera and Aphrodite, he stands out in a way that makes him an easy target. His very existence makes others uncomfortable, and many assume the worst about him before they ever get to know him.
If that sounds familiar, it’s because Demo’s struggle reflects something very real.
Many people grow up feeling like they don’t quite fit the expectations around them. Whether it’s being judged for how they look, where they come from, or simply being different from everyone else, prejudice can make the journey through school feel lonely.
Demo faces that same challenge.
He deals with bullying, suspicion, and the constant pressure to prove he deserves to be where he is. But just when things seem impossible, fate intervenes. Demo is chosen to become one of four new Guardians—protectors tasked with defending the world.
Suddenly, the outcast must become a hero.
But being chosen doesn’t magically erase his struggles. Demo must learn to control powers that are tied to his anger, work alongside teammates who may not trust him, and face enemies that test both his strength and his character.
More importantly, he has to believe in himself.
At its heart, Sinner is a story about overcoming the labels others place on us. It’s about discovering that courage isn’t the absence of fear—it’s moving forward despite it. And sometimes, the people who feel the most out of place are the ones who end up changing everything.
High school may not involve demigods or celestial battles, but the emotional journey is something many readers recognize. Learning who you are, finding people who accept you, and discovering your own strength are battles everyone faces at some point.
Demo’s story reminds us that being different isn’t a weakness.
Sometimes, it’s exactly what the world needs.
